Voidbound: Da Mushrum Kloudz Phase 3

Written by:

Our Voidbound campaign is now in phase 3 and that means I’ve had to paint another 500 points worth of Orks.  Here they are:

“WURZAG!”

Big Mek Wurzag flinched slightly.  His new ears still needed a bit of tweaking to deal better with loud noises.  He put down the gubbinz he’d been futzing with.  “Yes, boss?”

“Gud ta see ya back in one piece!”  Uzblitz slapped the Mek on the back hard enough that it almost rendered the statement inaccurate.  “Gobdreg tells me you bin workin’ on somethin’ for me?”

“Oh, did he?”  Wurzag looked at the smaller Mek in what would have been a glare if his bionik eyes had been capable of the expression.  Gobdreg looked mildly guilty for a second but this was replaced with a look of glee as Uzblitz tossed him a bottle of looted Imperial Schnapps.

“Well, yes,” he admitted.  “I ‘av put a little sumfing togevva.”  He held up a small device.

Uzblitz squinted down at it.  “Itz a box,”  he said.  “Wiv a button on it.”

“Itz linked to da new Orbital Bombardment Platform we gotz on da ship,”  Wurzag explained.  “If yer on a planet and ya want sumfing gone?  Point dis at it, press da button an’… BOOM!”

Uzblitz beamed.  “Well dun, Wurzag.  I knew it woz a gud idea to get da painboyz ta stick you back togevva.  Giz it ‘ere!”

Somewhat reluctantly the Mek handed over the device.  From across the hanger bay there was a low roar.  A group of Orks dressed in skins were wheeling a large cage containing a hulking shape across the deck.  “Wos’ appenin’?”

“We’z takin’ Da Fing out for walkies,” Uzblitz told him.  “You comin’?”

Big Mek Wurzag

Wurzag was the brains behind the Kustom-Mega-Blasta-Traktor-Kannon that allowed for the original capture of Da Gargantic.  Unfortunately during said event he was too slow to get out of the impact zone and has spent the last couple of months in a jar in a corner of the ship’s medibay until the painboyz could assemble a new body for him out of spare bits.  Now back on ‘his’ feet he’s wasted no time in putting together a new Big Gun, much to the chagrin of the ship’s Snotling community.

The Shokk Attack Gun was supposed to make its debut last phase, but a last-minute balance dataslate put the cost up over what I could fit in the list and I ended up going for the cheaper regular Mek instead.  But this is a great model and so I made sure I could fit it in this time instead.

Kro’s Huntaz, Beast Snagga Boyz

While the toxic wastelands from which Da Mushrum Kloudz originate are largely devoid of non-Orkoid life a few particularly fierce and hardy beasts and mutants still survive there.  Kro and his boyz took it upon themselves to demonstrate their orkliness by hunting these creatures.  They killed many such beasts, until one day…

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Beast Snagga range when I first saw it – it seemed an odd choice to make ‘feral’ 40k Orks when AoS and Old World have that niche well covered.  However I think this is largely a factor of the GW scheme, which paints a lot of metal to look like bone.  In reality these models actually fit quite well with the rest of the 40k range if you paint them appropriately, having plenty of guns, armour plates and bionik bits and basically just being Boyz with pelts instead of shirts.

Da Fing, Beastboss

This hideously mutated Ork was initially a feral outcast until he became a target of Kro’s Huntaz.  They hunted him down to his lair and attempted to kill him, but were so impressed by the fight he put up that Kro instead elected to capture him alive.  They now employ him as a kind of living battering ram, releasing him onto the battlefield and poking him in the vague direction of whatever they want destroyed.

I’m not a huge fan of the official Beastboss miniature – the big fur coat gives it old-lady-at-the-opera vibes to me, and I wanted to explore the ‘toxic mutant’ theme of the army a bit more.  So, I shaved a Skaven (Shaven?) Rat Ogre and stuck an Ork head on it.  Actually fairly straightforward as conversions go, but removing all of the fur texture to give it the appearance of smooth(ish) skin was quite time consuming.

Double Bubble Trouble, Mek Gun

Seeing the effectiveness of the first Bubblechukka built by Gobdreg, Wurzag quickly built one of his own.

I thought I’d try to offset the randomness of the Bubblechukka by bringing 2 of them. This is pretty much the same as the first one, but this time I’ve mixed around the gretchin head and arms to create some individuality and given it red accents on both the gun and crew to hopefully make it obvious which set of tokens belong to which.

Da Smashin Klub, Breaka Boyz

These Orks are great admirers of their Warboss and have armed themselves with great hammers in imitation of Uzblitz’s Rokkit Choppa.

I hadn’t really seen these when I built Uzblitz but when I did (and when they were finally released on their own so I could actually buy them) they matched his vibe so well I knew they had to be part of the army.

They’re cool models, but I’m not entirely happy with the paint job on them.  The yellow looks a bit faded and not as vibrant as on some of my other troops.  I think this may be due to spraying yellow over more of a purple base than a red one, or possibly just having too thin a coat.

Da FirewOrks, Burna Boyz

Ordinarily employed as a construction and repair crew assisting Big Mek Wurzag on board Da Gargantic, these Orks didn’t want to miss out on all the fun and so have souped up their welding gear to form impromptu flamers.

These are one of the older models that I like the most – they’re very characterful, super-easy to paint and the stooped butt-out posture makes a lot more sense when they’re weighed down under heavy gear.

Bonus: Orbital Bombardment Marker

The crusade I’m playing in has some custom rules for orbital bombardment, which requires a marker so I made a custom one:
